We were blessed with warm sunny weather and big surf all week long. The big waves didn't intimidate these youngsters. I didn't get any pics when they were charging 5 ft. Aliso because I was scared to see them go yet stoked to see them charge. All in all, this was a great group and I hope to see them all next year.

A couple months back, I was contacted by the Newport Harbor Nautical Museum about their upcoming renovation and exhibit entitled "Sea of Adventure."Sea of Adventure is a journey into the past, present and future of nautical exploration. The installations engage the visitor through stories and experiences that encourage exploration and discovery. I was fortunate enough to share my story as it relates to the ocean as a skimboarder and am featured in this exhibit. It's an honor to be part of this project and yet strangely weird to see a life sized cardboard cut out of myself in the exhibit. Nevertheless, it displays skimboarding in a positive light and as a part of Newport's culture. The exhibit was revealed on June 18th at it's private donor reception and is now available for public viewing.
Tampa, Florida's Fox news came to the Madeira Camp today interviewing Paulo and some of the campers. It was shown on Florida TV today at 5:45pm. Here's a brief description of what they had to say.
It's like any board sport: skate boarding, wake boarding, surf boarding -- but it's different. Kids these days are "stoked" over skim boarding. This sport really catches on this summer on the Gulf beaches. Surf shops offer rentals, lessons, even camps.

Campers will get a guided tour of Laguna as they're exposed to Laguna's best skim spots, hang outs, and peeps. For most of these campers, this isn't their first Alley Oop Adventure. The 8.8 earthquake that rocked Chile only days ago destroyed several coastal communities. Concepcion, The cities of Constitucion, and Curanipe are only a few that were greatly affected. These coastal communities were especially affected by the tsunami that followed the quake. There wasn't much protection from the tidal wave to protect the small fishing villages. As a result, the tsunami leveled these towns and left more wreckage in its wake than the initial earthquake.
Another good friend, Jose Rafael Campino, is one of the many Chileans who is organizing aid to these areas. He is part of an organization called Costa Sur Desolada. Jose Rafael explained it this way, "Our group is composed of engineers, architects and doctors who love that place. We are trying to do everything that is possible to help this amazing area, but to get food and materials we need money. We are all chilean and the idea is to solve the problems now!"
The efforts of Jose Rafael and many other Chileans has already been noticed by the L.A. Times. Read the article here.
As a result, Paulo Prietto is promoting Costa Sur Desolada in the States. "It's easy to forget about this tragic event and continue our daily lives, but I feel it's important to think outside of ourselves and help."
With the help of ExtremeOutdoorSupply.com, Paulo has organized an easy way for people to support the relief efforts. Follow the link below to donate online. All 100% of donations will go directly to food, clothing, building supplies, and other necessary items for the victims.
